When: June 12, 2008 at 6 p.m.
Where: 1040 S. Winter St. Adrian, MI in the Michigan State University Extension, River Raisin, and Spartan Meeting Rooms
More Information:
The U.S. Geological Survey has been a leader in addressing the nationwide occurrence of current use pesticides and emerging chemical contaminants in the environment. Emerging chemicals include a wide variety of prescription and non-prescription pharmaceuticals, personal care products, and chemicals with broad household uses, such as fragrance constituents, or fire retardants. These contaminants often come from sources that may also contain microbial pathogens.
This presentation will review the typical sources and environmental pathways for these emerging contaminants, and will discuss national studies and studies in several Michigan watersheds. Environmental factors and land-use variables that influence where, and in what amounts, emerging contaminants are detected will be discussed.
At the end of this presentation, attendees will have an enhanced perspective on the types and amounts of current-use chemicals present in Michigan’s waters and how these data compare with more regional and national data. The public is encouraged to attend the presentation, reservations may be made by calling the Lenawee Conservation District at (517) 263-7400.
