Aluminum Sulfate Spill Into River Raisin

Deerfield, Mich. – At approximately 3:40 pm yesterday afternoon local public health officials were made aware of an aluminum sulfate release into the River Raisin. In accordance with state environmental laws the Deerfield Water Treatment Plant reported to state and local public health agencies an unexpected release of 750 gallons of aluminum sulfate into the river. An undetected malfunction in a storage tank caused the release.

Aluminum sulfate is a water- soluble chemical routinely used in water treatment plants as a clarifying agent. Aluminum sulfate utilized by water treatment plants is of food grade quality that is commonly put into recreational surface water for algae control.

DEQ officials speculate there could be a minor aquatic effect observed in the river. As a precaution to avoid skin irritation, the Monroe County Health Department is notifying residents to avoid body contact with the River Raisin.

Officials at the Deerfield water treatment plant are working to locate a suitable replacement storage tank. A temporary, secure storage unit is being used until a new permanent tank is obtained.
